For all your computer requirements.... .... Your IT Department
Windows - The fastest way to select a large number of documents is to hit Ctrl-A (selecting them all) and then holding down the CTRL key while you deselect the ones you don't want.
Internet - Find a picture on the Internet that you like? Make it your Wallpaper by right-clicking on it and choose "Set as background."
Word - When copying and pasting text, choose "Paste Special" from the Edit menu (instead of plain old "paste") and then choose "Unformatted text." That way, the new text will not be formatted and will be easily altered to your specifications. Less cleanup!
Excel - Need to see the gridlines on a printed copy of your spreadsheet? Don't draw borders. Just pull down the File menu, choose "Page Setup," click the "Sheet" tab, and select "Gridlines" under the Print heading.
QuickBooks - Clean up your lists. If your Vendor list is getting out of control, why not consolidate unimportant or infrequently used names and merge them into generic names such as "Gas Stations" or "Meals". You can also Merge Customers, Items, Chart of Account Names, and more! Just Edit the one you want to change, re-name it as you want it to appear, and choose Yes when QB asks if you would like to Merge them.

| How to Hire Top-Notch Employees |
So much time and money is put into hiring competent employees for your company. But how do you really know that these people are going to be good employees?
When interviewing candidates for a job vacancy, make sure to ask probing questions rather than yes/no questions. This will give the interviewee the chance to express themselves and will give you the chance to hear verbal skills and creative thinking.
Ask questions like:
- Have you ever thought of a way to save your company money?
- When have you done something that you thought you couldn't do?
Also, look for Negative Factors to avoid, such as:
- Inability to communicate clearly
- Showing up late
- Lack of tact or maturity
ETR is offering a FREE 11 page Interviewing Handbook for a limited time only! This handbook includes questions that are designed to bring out information of the candidate's worth, since past behavior is the best indication of future action. Here are just a few helpful tips in this valuable workbook:
1. Tell me about a new system or procedure you instituted. ( INNOVATION) 2. Describe any promotions you've received. (POTENTIAL FOR GROWTH) 3. How would you deal with a co-worker or subordinate who resents you? (LEADERSHIP, COMMUNICATION) 4. How do you set your priorities? (ORGANIZATION)
At ETR we don't ask the typical "What are your strengths and weaknesses?". We believe that more innovative questions give a better insight into the applicant's true personality. Try asking these during your next interview:
1. What do you know about our company? 2. How did you spend your vacation while in school? 3. In what school activities have you participated? Why? 4. How did previous employers treat you? 5. What was the title of the last book you read? 6. What type of people 'rub' you the wrong way'?
The one routine question we do ask, however, is: Do you prefer to work alone or with a group? Anyone who tells you they prefer to work alone may not be a team player. EVERYONE has to be a team player to make your company be successful! For more tips and information on how to hire and retain good employees, click here.
Testing applicants is one of the best ways to measure their abilities. More than 90% of all applicants fib on their resume! If you are hiring a bookkeeper, be sure to test them in QuickBooks or whatever financial software your company uses. It is also crucial to contact previous employers and ask for a reference. Contacting personal references is a waste of time. Who would list someone that would give them a poor reference?
Spend a little extra time on bringing in the very best employees; they are your most valuable asset! In addition, employee turnover is bad for business. Customers notice the change, your business incures extra training costs to bring the new employee up to speed, a minimum 30-day learning curve, and lost income are just a few of the reasons to hire the right person the first time! Let ETR help!
Executive Training Resources offers interviewing and testing services! Our staff is trained to ask all of the right questions so that we are able to gather information they may not tell you in a regular interview. We have the tools to test applicants in many areas including: Typing Speed, Excel, Word, Access, QuickBooks, Customer Service Skills and more!
Only $35 per test! 208.525.8813
