  Computer Tips & Tricks

Windows - Is your "Program" list getting a bit unorganized? Click Start, Programs (or "All Programs"), right-click on any item in the dialog box and choose "Sort by Name." Now, your Program list is alphabetized and organized.

Internet - Not seeing the whole page when you are browsing the Web? Hit F11 to temporarily view more. Hitting F11 again, toggles it back. Very useful on text-intensive sites.

Word - Double-clicking anywhere on an un-edited portion of your document will place the cursor there, automatically inserting as many hard-returns and alignment changes as necessary. It is called, Click-Anywhere-and-Type.

Access - If a field, property box, or text box, has information in it, and you are unable to see it all you can expand these items to make it easier to edit and read. Open a Data Sheet, Property Sheet, or a Form in form view. Click the field you want to edit. Press SHIFT+F2. Bingo! Now you can see all the information.

Excel - The fill handle in Excel is the small black square in the lower-right corner of a selection (whether your selection is one cell or a range of cells). This handy fellow is one of the many different ways to fill data quickly into worksheet cells. For example, if you a have a number, word, or phrase in a cell that you'd like to have in one or more adjacent cells, you don't have to copy and paste. You just select the cell and drag the fill handle. Even better, the fill handle can automatically continue a series of numbers, number and text combinations, dates, or time periods, based on a pattern that you establish or pre-set information such as January, February, March, etc....
You have probably seen this symbol  :    Try it next time you are working in Excel.

10 Ways to Irritate Your HR Staff

In climbing the corporate ladder, one of the most powerful allies to have on your side is your Human Resources department. They have their finger on the pulse of the inner wiring of the organization, and if there is any staffer who can alert you to upcoming events that might be beneficial to you or your team, it is someone from HR.

To keep the alliance strong and working to your benefit, here are ten things you should NOT do:

  1. Treat HR staffers like glorified secretaries or gofers.
  2. Bring in your own search firms without getting HR's approval list first.
  3. Promise raises and/or promotions to your staff unless you have first cleared them with HR for consistency with others in similar jobs or grades.
  4. Fail to attend a meeting arranged at your request to discuss a performance problem with a member of your staff.
  5. Say anything remotely politically incorrect in a public place and then try to explain away your gaff by saying "but everyone knew I was kidding".
  6. Miss the deadlines for performance appraisals, bonus recommendations, merit increases, or job requisitions.
  7. Yell "With all the paperwork you require, it is impossible to run a business!"
  8. Tell HR it is their responsibility to develop job specs for your department.
  9. Be out of the office when candidates have been scheduled for job interviews.
  10. Ask for confidential information about salaries.

 Technical Humor

A walk-in job applicant was being interviewed by the manager of a computer store for a position as a technician.  The applicant got off to a bad start when she demanded a high salary before she and the manager had even begun to discuss the applicant's experience and skills. Things didn't get better when the manager noticed that the applicant didn't have any technical experience and very little sales experience of any kind.

"I'm surprised that you had the nerve to ask for such a large salary when you've never worked as a technician or done much selling!" said the manager.

"I've always found," said the applicant sagely, "that the work is much harder when you don't know what you're doing."
