Computer Tips & Tricks

Windows - To select large numbers of files (for deletion, copying, etc.), draw a box around them. To do this, hold down the left mouse button somewhere off to the side of the group of icons. While holding it down, drag your mouse, creating a dashed-line box. Surround any files you want to select. Easy!

Internet - Windows Update is the best Internet tool I know to plug security holes and fix bugs. From the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click Windows Update. It will lead you through the steps of automatically downloading any upgrades your system needs.

Word - Did someone send you a document typed in all UPPER CASE? Change it quickly by highlighting the objectionable text, and repeatedly hitting Shift-F3 until the correct case is shown.

Excel - Do you work with more than one workbook at a time. Use Ctrl-F6 to quickly jump between them.

5 Most Costly Payroll Mistakes

  • Human Error There are a multitude of opportunities for inaccurate data entry to occur along the information chain. Most payroll errors occur when keying in timecard information, and when entering employee data such as the name, address, vital statistics, and hourly rate.

  • Traditional time clock error Traditional time clocks allow missed punches, duplicate punches, and smudged, illegible timecards. With timecards, missed punches will not be caught until the timecards are being manually tallied. Then supervisors or managers are required to supply the missing information based on their memory of who was at work, when.

  • Overpayment A manually prepared payroll will eventually contain an error. According to the American Payroll Association, the average overpayment of work time (long lunches and breaks, tardiness, early departures, etc.) that can add up to 10 minutes per day, per employee. This can total up to tens of thousands of dollars per year!

  • Calculation errors for taxes, insurance, and benefits Tax filing is made easier if correct payroll records are kept. Governments expect timely, accurate reports and deposits. Heavy penalties and interest are levied against companies that fail to comply with regulations. Workers? compensation insurance for on-the-job injury is often overpaid by employers. Many businesses overstate their payrolls by not removing certain items with are excludable from the premium calculation such as tips, overtime, severance pay, expense reimbursements, employer-provided perks and limits on the wages of officers and inactive employees still receiving payroll. Small mistakes can add up to much higher premiums.

  • Inefficiency and wasted time In many businesses, payroll is a half-automated procedure at best. The employee time collection process-the repetitive collection, editing and entry of payroll data is still almost exclusively a manual, clerical process. Manual timekeeping is an expensive and time-consuming weekly or bi-weekly process. Manual calculation is just one way that timecards waste time. Timecards have to be distributed and collected. Payroll staff must spend time investigating timecard omissions, making corrections and responding to employee questions about alleged underpayment or other discrepancies.     What do Your Workers Really Want?

You may be surprised
A Saratoga Institute survey of more than 1,000 U. S. workers asked employees to identify factors that would make them more likely to remain with their current employers. The top three responses were:

1. Training and Mentoring

2. Earning Potential
3. Positive work relations

Job security was also important. However, only 27% said they were likely to stay where their long-term employment prospects were weak. Listen to your employees and let ETR train them to become your most loyal employees as well as your most educated team!

Label Warnings
Have you ever read the little warning labels on appliances and toys?  Some are quite silly.  For instance, a tag on my new iron says, Do not iron clothes while wearing them.  Here are a few of the most absurd warnings from www.dumbwarnings.com
